Key takeaways
- You cannot kill the Deer. No weapon damages it and it cannot be tamed.
- It hunts players outside the campfire's light at night, starting on Day 2.
- A flashlight stuns it for a moment, but it recovers faster each time you use one.
- From Day 5, the monster of whichever biome is on your map can take its place: the Owl, the Ram, the Cat or the Bat.
- On Hungry nights, or if your campfire goes out, the Deer is faster, hits harder and has red eyes.
The short answer
The Deer is the main monster in 99 Nights in the Forest, and you cannot kill it. No weapon damages it and it cannot be tamed. It hunts anyone outside the campfire’s light at night, starting on Day 2. Your tools against it are a flashlight, which stuns it briefly, breaking line of sight, and getting back to the fire.
How the Deer behaves
- Night only. It hunts at night and runs off at dawn.
- Day 1 is safe. It leaves players alone on the first day.
- It speeds up the longer it chases you, so a long chase in the open is a losing race.
- The campfire is safe. When it reaches the safe zone around your fire, it gives up.
- Raids: during cultist raids it can stand beside your fire, and it walks away if you go up to it.
How to survive the Deer
- Carry a flashlight. Shining it on the Deer stuns it for a moment. It recovers faster every time, so use the stun to get away, not to stand and fight.
- Break line of sight. Loop around big trees or buildings to lose it.
- Head for the fire. Once you are back in the campfire’s light, the chase is over.
- Keep the campfire burning. If the fire goes out, the Deer turns hungry.
The Owl, the Ram and the other biome monsters
From Day 5, the monster of whichever biome is on your map can take over from the Deer. None of them can be killed either.
| Monster | Biome | How to deal with it |
|---|---|---|
| The Owl | Snow | It lands near you and watches. Stand still to pass its check. A flashlight stuns it but makes it hostile. |
| The Ram | Volcanic | It charges once a meter fills and knocks down trees. Sidestep the charge. A flashlight works while it walks, not mid-charge. |
| The Cat | Jungle | Another unkillable biome monster. |
| The Bat | Caves | Another unkillable biome monster. |
Enemies you can fight
- Cultists attack your camp at night from Day 4, then every 4 days. There are many types, from melee and crossbow cultists to the Juggernaut and Brute.
- The Cultist King is a boss you summon in the Volcanic Biome. It can drop the Volcanic Bear Trap tablet and the Infernal Sack.
- Alpha Wolves (125 HP) show up once your campfire is level 3 or higher. They guard the Kraken Kid, and you can tame one with a Good Taming Flute or better.
A strong combat class makes these fights much easier. See the best class tier list.
Next: rescue the four missing kids to make every day go faster.
